Pointless ‘Arrrrr’ Pun
This NYT article is about a pirate festival on Tybee Island in Georgia, right outside Savannah, where I have spent many a happy hour (and a few unhappy hours when I got stung by a Portuguese Man o'War one time. Also, I remember the pervy proprietor of this beachside burger and shake joint there was really into how I looked like Dorothy Lamour for a while, mainly because I was always wearing a sarong.) Unsurprisingly, a horde of would-be Jack Sparrows have taken over the pretending-to-be-a-pirate scene, previously dominated by--or at least notable for-- pirate reenactors more concerned with authenticity than eyeliner. I think that sounds way more fun than reeancting WWI trench warfare; I should suggest it to my sister. The article makes a point of claiming that both black and white people came for the piratin', but if so they didn't capture the multi-ethnic harmony in their slideshow of whiteness (I can't link, but click through). They did demonstrate that sketchy rednecks can make realistic-looking pirates, though.
